Frankie Vaughan
1956
Frankie Vaughan studied at Leeds College of Art in the late 1940s and it was while in Leeds he was given his first professional engagement at the City Varieties music hall after being spotted singing in a student concert in the city. Impressed by his subsequent performance the City Varieties owner, Harry Joseph, arranged for Frankie to have an audition in London although initially Frankie preferred to seek a career as a commercial artist instead. His first performance in a trial run at the Kingston Empire resulted in five curtain calls, by the second performance he had been promoted to second on the bill. He went on to be one of the UK’s most popular entertainers with over 80 singles and two UK #1′s as well as appearing in several Hollywood movies including playing leading man to Marilyn Monroe.
